Geography 50

We are almost done with all of the continents. Australia is our last one. What have you liked about Australia that we have learned so far? Australia is called "the land down under" because it is below the equator. Some of the children in Australia go to a school similar to yours or the ones perhaps your brothers and sisters go to. There are some children though that live in the outback of Australia. They can't just get on a bus and go to school because it is so far. Some of those children get to listen to their teacher on the radio. It is called school of the air. The children mail their tests and homework  to the teacher and she mails them back after he or she looks at them to see how the children are doing with their school work.

Most of the food people eat in Australia is like the food you eat here. Mutton is a popular dish. What is mutton? It is meat from a sheep. Another fun food children like to eat in Australia is fairy bread. This is a piece of white bread cut into triangles or other shape that had butter on one side of it. Then  the butter is covered with colorful sprinkles, called 'hundreds and thousands' in Australia. Fish and chips and sausage rolls are also a food enjoyed by children in Australia.

The beach is a fun place to go in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is in the ocean near Australia. It is the world's largest coral reef!  A coral reef is a warm, shallow, clear ocean habitat. Corals are tiny marine animals that live in colonies. There are two types of coral, hard and soft coral.  It is the hard coral that form coral reefs. A reef is home to many ocean animals. Many kinds of fish, sea snakes, snails, and other animals like crabs. Australia has the largest reef in the world!
