Need for lesson – A sample of a pulley type of simple machine.

We have been learning about simple machines. Today we want to talk about the pulley. A pulley is a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load. Remember force is a push or a pull. Work is done where a force moves something. So a pulley helps us to do a work easier.

With a fixed pulley, the pulley is attached to a hook or a wall and doesn’t move. A clothesline that is attached to an outside wall, like the side a house, is a sample of this. As one pulls the upper clothesline rope towards them, it pushes the lower rope away from them.

With a movable pulley, you can pull with less force for a longer distance to get the same work done.In a movable pulley, the pulley itself moves up and down with the load. It lets you lift things that would be too heavy for you without a pulley.

The raising of a flag and the blinds you might have at home in your windows are other examples of where a pulley simple machine is used. Let’s look at this sample of a pulley.
