Need for lesson - A sample of a pulley type of simple machine.
can be pasted onto an index file card for quick reference
We have been learning about simple machines. Today we want to talk about the pulley. A pulley is a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load. Remember force is a push or a pull. Work is done where a force moves something. So a pulley helps us to do a work easier.
With a fixed pulley, the pulley is attached to a hook or a wall and doesn't move. A clothesline that is attached to an outside wall, like the side a house, is a sample of this. As one pulls the upper clothesline rope towards them, it pushes the lower rope away from them.
With a movable pulley, you can pull with less force for a longer distance to get the same work done.In a movable pulley, the pulley itself moves up and down with the load. It lets you lift things that would be too heavy for you without a pulley.
The raising of a flag and the blinds you might have at home in your windows are other examples of where a pulley simple machine is used. Let's look at this sample of a pulley.
