Need for lesson - Types of Weather card set (from MontessoriPrintShop.com), a globe, and a flashlight.
can be pasted onto an index file card for quick reference
We have talked about the four seasons that make up a year. Can you tell me the name of the seasons? During the different seasons, the weather changes. We experience different kinds of weather in different seasons. There are many kinds of weather. What might the weather be like in the Winter time? How about in the Summer? What makes the weather? What is weather?
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere, or the air all around the earth. What is happening in the atmosphere gives us the weather we see and feel. The sun is an important factor for different kinds of weather. Due to the tilt of our planet, the sun heats up places near the equator a lot more than places near the poles. The different hot and cold regions on the earth constantly heat and cool the air around our planet (use globe and flashlight as the sun to demonstrate and point out the equator and pole areas). This causes the air to move as wind, and causes water vapor in the air to form into clouds, rain, and snow. Daily changes in the weather are due to wind and storms. Seasonal changes are due to the Earth rotating around the sun. It takes the Earth one year to travel around the sun. During that year the weather changes in different parts of the Earth.
Meteorologist are scientist that study and predict the weather. They help to inform people of what the weather will be so they can plan how to dress and be ready for the day. If a snow storm is coming, Meteorologist inform people on the news or radio and then people can plan for the snowstorm.
Let's look at these cards that show different kinds of weather.
Types of Weather
Weather Charts - Charts or other means by which the children can check the weather each day.
Weather Booklets - Have pre-cut cloud shapes, raindrops shapes, sun shapes, cotton for the snow, and markers or pencils to color the book and make a rainbow at the end. (Booklet from kidssoup.com)

What Makes Weather? (Helen H. Moore)
What makes weather, do you know?
What makes it rain, and sleet, and snow?
What makes Summer warm and breezy?
What makes Winter cold and sneezy?
What makes Autumn crisp and keen?
What makes Spring so warm and green?
I know, I know, what makes weather
Lots of things that work together:
Wind, water, and Earths rotation
Bring the seasons to each nation.
So now we all know what makes weather-
Lots of things that work together!
I like to watch the way the wind
can spin a weather vane.
I like to wear my big blue boots
to splash with in the rain.
I like to ride my bright red sled
on cold and snowy days.
I like to feel the sun’s warm rays
when I wade in ocean waves.
Wind, rain, snow, and sun
Every kind of weather is wonderful and fun!
Need for lesson - The book "Cotton" and a cotton plant.
Have a brief discussion about the many things we get from plants. Show the children the cotton plant and ask what they think we get from it. Read the story and discuss with the children how important and helpful this plant is for people. We get clothes, towels, blankets, and many other things from this one plant!
This is a picked from a cotton plant in Texas. A friend brought it back for me after their visit to Texas. My brother-in-law also heard that I was looking for some cotton and found me an entire plant! I was excited to have both finds. So express the things you are looking for for your classroom and you just may receive it!
Cotton Plant - This is made with cotton balls, to have the children make their own cotton plant.
