Zoology 15

There are five groups of vertebrates. They are fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and birds. We are going to talk about birds. What makes a bird belong to this group? Do you think it is because they have wings? Well, it can't be that, other animals have wings that are not birds - like bats.

What makes a bird different than any other animal is its feathers! All birds have feathers. So if it has feathers it is a bird and belongs to the bird class or group of vertebrates.

There are a great variety of birds. There are what we call backyard birds. There are tropical and woodland birds. Water birds, domestic birds, and birds-of-prey are some others. Oh, and we can't forget the sea birds, birds that live by oceans and seas.

Birds are many different sizes. The ostrich can weigh as much as 300 pounds and then the small hummingbirds can weigh less than a penny!

Let's look at parts of a bird. Demonstrate Parts of a Bird.

Practical Life:

Pom-Pom Tweezing - These bowls are so cute, I wanted to share them with you. You cannot tell from the picture, but the front of the bowls have bird feet painted on them. They are little bird dishes from Hobby Lobby, a craft store in our area.

Bird Puzzle Pictures - Children can trace around the bird puzzle pieces and water color them or color them.

Bird Puppets - Children color a parrot, a tropical bird, and glue them onto a stick to make a puppet.

Bird Booklets - These were from a resource book at the library. This is before I staple them into booklets and place it on the shelf. I wanted to show the pictures of all the birds in the booklet.

Little Bird

I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop
I told the little bird to stop, stop, stop
I went to the window to say, How do you do?"
He moved his tail
And away he flew

Birdie In the Tree (tune - ABC's)

Birdie birdie in the tree
Birdie birdie sing to me
Birdie birdie on the ground
How I love your pretty sound
Sing so high, sing so low
Sing your song, then off you go
