Zoology 15

There are five groups of vertebrates. They are fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and birds. We are going to talk about birds. What makes a bird belong to this group? Do you think it is because they have wings? Well, it can’t be that, other animals have wings that are not birds – like bats.

What makes a bird different than any other animal is its feathers! All birds have feathers. So if it has feathers it is a bird and belongs to the bird class or group of vertebrates.

There are a great variety of birds. There are what we call backyard birds. There are tropical and woodland birds. Water birds, domestic birds, and birds-of-prey are some others. Oh, and we can’t forget the sea birds, birds that live by oceans and seas.

Birds are many different sizes. The ostrich can weigh as much as 300 pounds and then the small hummingbirds can weigh less than a penny!
