Geography 17

This is the continent of North America. We know some of the countries in North America. This is the United States. Here is Mexico. This is Canada. What is it like it Canada?

In Canada most of the people speak French. In Canada sugar maple trees grow all over. These trees are helpful in many ways. One way is because its wood is very hard and strong, that it is often used for the lumber that is used to build houses and other things. The trees are also important because the sap they have is used for syrup. These trees are so important to Canada that we find the leaf of the sugar maple tree on the flag of Canada!

This is a Mountie with his uniform on. The Mounties are the Royal Canadian Police. The Mounties of today wear these uniforms on special occasions, like a parade.

Some animals that are found in Canada are moose, grizzly bears, beaver, and geese. The lakes have many fish and the oceans are filled with lobsters, scallops and salmon fish.

Need for lesson – Pictures of different hourglasses (or a real one if available) and basket with a few different kinds of smaller minute ones.

History 4

Look at this picture, what do you think this is? It is called an hourglass. It is sometimes called a sand glass, sand timer, or a sand clock. It is a glass timer devise that is used to measure set amounts of time. It is a kind of clock made of two glass vessels connected with a narrow passage, with sand flowing through it. It takes the sand one hour or sixty minutes to flow from the top glass to the bottom one. Once all the sand flows to the bottom it the hourglass can be turned over so the sand flows through again to measure another hour of time. These were used a long time ago before clocks were invented or made.

These are smaller ones. They keep track of less time. Why do you think it is less time? They are smaller and have less sand. Let’s watch the sand go through from the top to the bottom and see how long it is. These can be used in playing games, maybe you have seen them or used one before.

Hourglasses were a way of keeping track of time a long time ago, they are a part of History, from the past.
